A Family Adventure in TokyoA Family Adventure in Tokyo

Itinerary
Day One

This fabulous three night, four day experience to the exciting city of Tokyo begins as you arrive at Tokyo Narita Airport. As you pass through customs, your driver will be waiting to take you in your private limousine to your accommodation. The journey will take approximately an hour and a half.

Your accommodation for the next three nights including breakfast will be at the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo. The Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is located in the prestigious Nihonbashi area, where 400 years of history and traditions mix with modern urban innovations. The hotel itself is a haven of luxury and style in the middle of a bustling city, and is just minutes from the Imperial Palace and exclusive Ginza shopping area.

Day Two

Today Quintessentially Escape has arranged a half day’s guided tour of the city and surrounding areas. You can choose to do the tour in the morning or afternoon. This bespoke tour of the city will be tailored to your group’s interests, but one of the ‘must sees’ in Tokyo is the Meiji Shrine. This elegant shrine is an oasis of peace, set in a beautiful park. Other notable destinations of interest are the National Museum and the Nezu Institute of Fine Art.

This evening you will be treated to a wonderful dinner on board a traditional Japanese houseboat. Marvel at the spectacular views of the Rainbow Bridge, and other beautiful Tokyo landmarks whilst you enjoy a sumptuous Japanese feast onboard this fascinating old boat. If the mood takes you, Geisha or Karaoke can be arranged upon request.

Day Three

This morning, Quintessentially Escape has arranged an exciting private Taiko drumming session for the family. After breakfast, you will travel to a private studio in Asakusa, which has a 140 year history of Taiko drumming expertise. This will be an immensely fun activity for all the family, however if the children are too young to participate, Quintessentially Escape will be happy to arrange an alternative activity.

After the drumming session, Quintessentially Escape recommends you spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the area of Asakusa, as the area has a less frenetic and more traditionally Japanese atmosphere than some other neighborhoods of Tokyo. There are a large number of religious establishments in the area, and as a result there are frequent matsuri (Shinto festivals) in the area, as each temple or shrine hosts at least one matsuri per year.

The largest and most popular is the Sanja Matsuri in May, in which roads are closed from dawn until late in the evening. It is also possible to take in the sights of the area by rickshaw and Quintessentially Escape will be pleased to arrange this for you.

This evening there are no set plans for dinner, but Quintessentially Escape would be pleased to make a reservation at one of Tokyo’s best known and lively sushi restaurants in the trendy Ginzo area of town.

Day Four

On your final day in Tokyo, Quintessentially Escape has arranged a final fascinating and very calming Japanese cultural activity for the family. After breakfast you will make your way to a nearby traditional Japanese house, where you will take part in a traditional tea making ceremony. The tea ceremony is a traditional and ancient activity in which powdered green tea, called matcha, is ceremonially prepared and served to others. Zen Buddhism was integral to its development, and this influence pervades many aspects of the ceremony.  Indeed the beauty of the ceremony is in its simplicity.

After the tea ceremony has ended, you will return to the hotel, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy a quick lunch, before departing to the airport in your private limousine for your onward flight to Hong Kong.
